Your daughter will enjoy a full Science programme from the age of four and this is carefully structured to ensure her progression in the key areas of skills, knowledge and the understanding of scientific concepts. She is encouraged to work independently and carry out investigations. The work is approached through topics which include aspects of biological, physical and chemical science, emphasis is placed on practical and enquiry-based learning. Science is a core subject in the National Curriculum and our curriculum is based upon the recommended programmes of study. In Prep 5 and 6 pupils are taught Science by specialists from the Senior School and when they are in Prep 6 the girls use the laboratories in the Senior School.
Our Science schemes of work aim to develop your daughter’s natural sense of curiosity and enjoyment of the world around her. They also work to develop a set of attitudes which will promote scientific ways of thinking, including open-mindedness, perseverance, objectivity and a recognition of the importance of teamwork. We want children to come to understand the nature of “scientific method” involving: meticulous observation, the making and testing of hypotheses, the design of fair and controlled experiments, the drawing of meaningful conclusions through critical reasoning and the evaluation of evidence. We encourage girls to become effective communicators of scientific ideas, facts and data. Through work in Science your daughter will begin to build up a body of scientific knowledge and understanding which will serve as a foundation for future enquiry.
