Geography (KS3, GCSE and A level)

"Geography is the subject which holds the key to our future" - Michael Palin.

KS3 Geography explores a wide variety of Physical and Human Geography topics which give the girls grounding in understanding where we are in the world.  We study a range of tradition topics including Tectonics, Coasts and Population but also a number of new topics such as the Geography of Conflict through the case study of Afghanistan, Extreme Weather and Climate Change, Mapping Crime using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Development in South East Asia.

During the GCSE years we study the AQA Syllabus. This exciting course is based on a balanced framework of Physical and Human Geography. It allows the girls to investigate the link between the two themes, and approach and examine the battles between the man-made and natural worlds. Our current chosen topics include Cold Environments, Coastal Landscapes, Glacial Landscapes and Energy. The Girls also have the opportunity to undertake fieldwork to destinations including, The Jurassic Coastline- Lyme Regis and Charmouth, Bristol, Exeter, North Wales and North Devon. We aim to get the Girls outside as much as possible.

In the Sixth Form, girls are offered an OCR A-Level in Geography. The aim is to encourage learners to develop a range of essential skills for Higher Education and the world of work through content which is relevant to any citizen of the planet in the 21st century. The assessment is carried out across three papers plus an Individual Investigation. Paper 1 covers an in-depth study of Systems including Coastal, Carbon and Water. The Human paper explores the Changing Places, Making Spaces as well as Migration and Power and Borders. The final paper is based on contemporary challenges and provides the Girls with an opportunity tackle topical debates such as Climate Change, Food Security and Diseases. Girls also undertake a 4 day residential to Nettlecombe Court, Taunton to prepare for the Individual Investigation.

What the girls say

“The  Geography course is similar to GCSE but the subjects are studied to a greater depth. The lessons are really interesting and fun – I especially enjoy debating new topics with my classmates. The A level offers grounding in both human and physical Geography that can be taken further.”
