Drama & Theatre Studies (KS3, GCSE and A level)

Drama is thriving at Bruton School for Girls, with numerous performances being staged throughout the year.  Our vibrant productions play an important part in the life of the school and include large-scale school plays and musicals, GCSE and A level plays, devised theatre, Hall performances and pantomimes.  A large range of theatre is covered, from classics to the latest contemporary plays.

Our Hobhouse Studio Theatre is a 100-seat venue, fully professionally fitted with theatre lights, sound system and digital projector.  A charming performance space, it maintains the atmosphere of a small professional theatre.  The Hobhouse Studio Theatre is in constant use for Drama lessons, workshops and performances.  We often include film within our performances, and students thoroughly enjoy going ‘on location’ for a spot of film acting.

Our annual school play is eagerly anticipated by students and staff alike.  Drama is an inclusive subject, and every student who wishes to be involved is welcome, whether onstage or behind the scenes.  Staff members love to jump on board with the show, whether it be playing in the orchestra pit, make-up design or stage management.  Our whole-school productions have been performed in our Assembly Hall, Hobhouse Studio Theatre and even in the open air on our Magnolia Lawn.

Drama forms part of the curriculum for all students in Senior 1, 2 and 3.  It is also a popular subject at GCSE and A level, where we gain outstanding results. The Drama department offers Speech and Drama lessons as an ‘extra’ to students in Prep 4 through to the Upper Sixth.  This is highly popular and many students take LAMDA examinations Grades 1-8 and beyond in a variety of dramatic subjects.  These include Acting, Devised Performance, Musical Theatre, The Speaking of Verse and Prose and Public Speaking.  Most students pass their Bronze, Silver and Gold medal examinations with Merit or Distinction, gaining valuable UCAS points which can count towards university entrance.

Students across all year groups see a wide range of professional theatre locally in Bath, Bristol and Salisbury, as well as further afield.  Our annual GCSE and A level theatre trip to London’s West End is a highlight in the school calendar as we take in a matinée and an evening performance, as well as a spot of shopping in Covent Garden and dinner in a West End restaurant.  A level students also enjoy trips to the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon.  We often invite theatre practitioners to hold workshops with students, exploring both acting and technical theatre.

What our girls say
“Drama gave me the ability to speak and express myself with confidence in front of an audience.” Meghan, S4
"If you love all aspects of the theatre, then Drama is the course for you. It is demanding but very rewarding and enjoyable.”
