Violinist scoops Sherborne Musician of the Year Award

Year 10 music student, Christiana Bingley, hit all the right notes when she was judged winner of the String Section Award at the Sherborne Young Musician of the Year Competition held at Sherborne School last week.

Part of the prize will see violinist Christiana travel to Zvolan in Slovakia to join winners from nine other Young Musician competitions, organised in towns across Europe, for workshops, master classes with eminent musicians and a gala concert as well as a range of social activities and visits.

The M4EU project was conceived to give young musicians a range of experiences, to let them mix with their peers from other nationalities and appreciate how music brings them together.

Christiana performed contrasting works by Bach and Kodaly for the judges and said:

“I really enjoyed playing in the Sherborne Young Musician of the Year competition but it was also rather nerve-wracking.  However, I am looking forward very much to the master classes in Slovakia over the summer; it is such an exciting opportunity.”

Mr Matt Dury, Director of Music at Bruton School for Girls, praised Christiana’s dedication and talent:  “This is a wonderful accolade for Christiana and is well deserved.  We also offer her congratulations for the additional news that she passed her Grade 8 violin exam with distinction – well done Christiana!”
